A minimum of 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
