Approximately 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.

Police say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.

Officers then located multiple other marked cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.

"There is still no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.

Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.

An important official said the attack made him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a assailant focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
