Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these medications should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
