The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
