Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
